Renovation of an apartment in Pagrati

This project was a complete renovation of an 80sqm apartment as well as its adjoining one of 50sqm. These two apartments belonged to a single owner who required space to practice his opera singing as well as a comfortable setting to entertain his guests for the brief periods that he returns to Athens between performing dates abroad.
It was immediately apparent that keeping some of the most charming architectural features of the original 1950ʼs architecture of the apartments was the way to plan the renovation.
In order to provide generous and brighter spaces for dining and relaxing some of the old partition walls were torn down but not made to disappear entirely. Instead I decided to keep and highlight their footprints on the old wooden floor as if they were inscriptions or marks of past narratives.
Other features such as folding and sliding doors were given new life as cabinets, bookcase stands or clothes hangers. All these created a long and sinuous construction that demarcated the threshold between the two apartments featuring book and record collections. This provided a discreet passage from the common to the private realm that changed opacity depending on how it was used.
A new kitchen was also designed that afforded ample daylight to the adjoining master bathroom through a new glass block extension that brought the two into dialogue

The project is a complete interior renovation of an apartment so as to convert it to a brand new residential space.
The basic idea was to create a spacious living area, where the different uses are organized according to a central fireplace.
